Halloween Happenings

I've seen a lot of memes floating around facebook detailing how hard it is to be a teacher on Halloween. Honestly, our day wasn't bad ... I think the key is throwing the strict lesson plans out the window and focusing on fun ... which is just what we did!

Our day started with the first annual HVCS costume parade. It was so much fun seeing everyone's costumes! (For more pictures, you can check out the HVCS facebook page.)

After the parade, Mrs. Shepard led the K5 and first grade classes in a pumpkin lesson. Your child will bring home a booklet with the same message, but the gist of it is that we are like pumpkins -- we're filled with icky stuff inside until Jesus comes and cleans us out, and we should let His light shine from within.

Next we went on a leaf walk! The kids enjoyed choosing leaves of different colors and shapes, and they did a great job only choosing the prettiest ones!

At the end of the day, we had a super fun science lesson. Piggybacking off our recent study of liquids, solids, and gasses, we mixed cornstarch and water and enjoyed playing with its sometimes-liquid-sometimes-solid properties.

Then we went outside and added gas to the mix! (Naturally, this is when my phone died, so no pictures.) We poured small amounts of our water-cornstarch mixture into a container with the lid, then added two alka-seltzer tablets broken into small pieces. We put the lids on and watched the bubbles form inside (the gas!), culminating in the lid popping off due to the buildup of the gas! As a grand finale, we put LOTS of alka-seltzer in the last batch, and the lid shot way up into the air!

The kids loved this activity so much, several of them went home and asked their parents if they could repeat it at home. Good luck, moms and dads! Ha ha! It's messy, but it cleans up really easily.
