K5 gardeners

Kindergarten was recently gifted with some leftover carrot and brussel sprout seeds, so we got our hands dirty this week! First we cleared out two big planters in our school garden area ...

Some of these old things were STUBBORN!

We stirred up our soil using spades and hand-held rakes, and the next day we planted our seeds.

We also saved some apple seeds from our recent apple unit in science, so one planter is a "test facility," ha ha ha. We'll see if we manage to grow an apple tree! How cool would that be if we're successful ... to have our very own tree from which to pick apples!

First Donut Day

Every other Friday, HVCS offers students the chance to purchase either donuts or biscuits; the money raised goes toward various minor improvements around the school. A couple of weeks ago, we had our first donut day ... here are some pictures!

Tomorrow is biscuit day, which Mrs. Viall likes more than donut day ... less sugar = calmer kiddos! 😉

S'mores ... the aftermath

A couple of weeks ago, you may have seen a facebook post featuring the s'mores we made using a homemade solar oven. (If not, you can click here.) Well, here are some photos of what happened when we returned to our oven two hours later ...

The temperature inside our solar oven reached more than 120 degrees F!
(Mental note: next year, bring a thermometer that registers more than 120! 😁 )

Our s'mores were melty and delicious!
