Book Party

Throughout the year, we've been using this little chalkboard in Mrs. Viall's room to keep track of the number of books we've read together. It's great practice for reviewing math skills -- we are adding higher and higher, we practice writing the numbers, and we locate the number on our 100's chart -- but it's also just plain fun to watch the total increase every day. Back in November, one little boy said, "We should have a party when we get to 100!" And thus the idea of a book party was born!

I asked the students what kinds of things they wanted to do at the party, and their ideas were fabulous. They wanted to bring in their favorite books from home, have older kids come and read to them, and -- randomly -- dance to "Zero the Hero," a math song about counting by 10's. It was easy to incorporate all of their requests, and on Friday we had the (hopefully) first annual K5 book party!

I was most excited to see the books they'd bring in as their favorites, and there was quite a variety! From sticker books to nonfiction to a book with no pictures (literally ... it was called The Book With No Pictures) to a classic that had belonged to a parent, we had tons of great books brought in! Before the big kids came in to read with us, the kindergartners took turns sitting in the sharing chair to tell us about their books.

A Peppa Pig book with stickers!

Violet the Pilot, about a girl inventor.

This one was a hit with all the boys!

Kindergartners love fairy tales!

This book, The Fourteen Bears, belonged to her mom!

This boy is obsessed with all things Halloween, so it made sense that he'd bring in a mummy book.

How cool is this book, with each page a different mouth?!?

The Llama Llama book series is the best!

There weren't pictures, but there were some funny words.

Opening the book to his favorite page. Aren't boys hilarious?

When show and tell was over, the third graders came in and spent about 20 minutes reading with us. They read each child's favorite book to them, and then we had a little time to swap and share other students' favorites.

Finally, we enjoyed a special treat -- book cookies!

What a fun day! One of our girls pronounced it the best. day. of. school. ever. 😍 And wouldn't you know, the kids are already planning how to celebrate 200!

Gumdrop building

Before Christmas, we tried our hand at building Christmas trees using only toothpicks and gumdrops! Resisting the temptation to eat the gumdrops was hard, but everyone managed to design and build some pretty cool structures! (And they may have been given a few treats at the end of this lesson!)

A snowy day

On December 8 (my birthday! 😉), we were treated to our first taste of snow! Although it didn't amount to much, it did give us a chance to get outside and play in it ... and to get out of school a little early!

I think it's safe to say that the students and the teachers are hoping for more of the white stuff this winter!
