The cold month of January is the perfect time to study cold climates and polar animals! We learned that snowflakes are symmetrical, then we bent a pipe cleaner to look like a snowflake and submerged them into a solution of borax and hot water. Our scientists were so cute as they helped mix the solution.
After the solution was mixed, we dipped each snowflake into it, hung it from a craft stick spanning the top, and let it sit overnight.
To observe Martin Luther King Day, we did Mrs. Viall's favorite egg experiment. We observed the differences between brown eggs and white eggs. Then we cracked them! Wonder of wonders, they were exactly the same on the inside -- just like people!
We put on "polar bear paws" and played an alphabet game. It was tricky picking up the alphabet cards with their paws!
We had a surprise visit from a classmate's new great dane!
And finally, we demonstrated how blubber on a polar bear helps keep it warm in the cold arctic. In the photos below, one hand is unprotected in a bowl of ice; the other hand is inside a blubber "glove" made with crisco and ziplock bags. The difference is amazing!
No matter the weather, we always have fun in kindergarten!
