Alphabet soup

Last week we pretended to make alphabet soup! We put magnetic letters into bowls of water and stirred and stirred. Then, one by one, students had to scoop out each letter and find its match on their waterproof alphabet mats.

While the students were "cooking," Mrs. Viall was able to walk around and informally assess the students' abilities -- so much better than sitting in a room and calling out letters! You can try something similar at home if you have magnetic letters -- let your child scoop them out one by one and tell you the name of the letter. It's a perfect activity for a hot summer day!
