Center time

Play is such an important part of early childhood development, and even with the academic rigors of kindergarten, we try to make playing part of every school day. One of the ways we do this is through "Center time" on Thursday afternoons. The students are given about 50 minutes to simply play in the classroom. Sometimes I get out a few activities; other times, they choose their own fun. I love being a fly on the wall during their playtime, and it warms my heart to hear them saying such things as:
  • "I'll help you!"
  • "Come play with me!"
  • "Let's take turns. You go first and then I'll go."
(Seriously, I overheard all of these things last week!) Recently, the classroom science equipment was the biggest hit.

Other students choose to play games or work puzzles together.

Whatever they decide to do, Center Time is always a highlight of the week!
